Rotterdam is at the heart of this cultural hub, and its newest attraction, the Netherlands Photo Museum, is a game-changer. Opened in February in the vibrant Katendrecht district, this museum boasts one of the world's largest photography collections and offers a unique accommodation experience. With 16 short-stay studios and one-bedroom apartments atop the museum, you can literally sleep above this incredible collection.
I recently spent a couple of nights in one of these studios, and it was a world away from my last museum sleepover - a mattress on the floor at London's Science Museum. At the Netherlands Photo Museum, you're not just inside the galleries, but you're literally sleeping on top of 6.5 million images! The ground floor is free to enter, making it the buzziest aparthotel lobby you'll ever relax in. And with a strong Brazilian coffee blend and a library of photography books open to all, it's an art lover's dream.
But here's a twist... the museum's galleries are a bit elusive, offering just 100 "icons" of Dutch photography. However, this is made up for by the powerful photographic experience at Fenix, an airy gallery a short distance away. Here, you'll find an exhibition that explores human migration, with a memorable room dedicated to giant black-and-white images of our species on the move.
And the artistic offerings don't stop there! Katendrecht is a foodie's paradise, with cafes and restaurants offering inventive cuisine amidst a unique skyline. From guinea fowl with blackberry and coffee to well-balanced dishes, you'll find plenty to refuel your artistic soul.
Just across the Nieuwe Maas river, you'll discover the Kunsthal, a modernist gem with flamboyant exhibitions. From March to August, it will showcase the beauty of flowers in all their forms across 200 exhibits. And for those who can't resist more art, a trip to The Hague is a must. Here, you'll find Johannes Vermeer's iconic 17th-century masterpiece, The Girl with a Pearl Earring, hanging in the Mauritshuis.
