A Tale of Two Fuel Prices: The Rise and Fall of LPG and ATF
In a recent development, the price of commercial LPG cylinders has taken a leap, increasing by a substantial Rs 111 per cylinder. On the other hand, aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, witnessed a welcome reduction of 7.3% on Thursday. This dual movement in fuel prices is a result of the monthly revisions implemented by state-owned oil marketing companies, which are aligned with global fuel benchmarks.
Let's delve into the details. The ATF price in Delhi saw a significant cut of Rs 7,353.75 per kilolitre, bringing it down to Rs 92,323.02 per kl. However, the commercial LPG rates were not so fortunate, experiencing a hike of Rs 111 per 19-kg cylinder, in line with the global market trends.
The Oil Ministry has commented on this price increase, stating that commercial LPG cylinder prices are determined by the market and linked to international benchmarks. Any revisions in commercial LPG prices are a direct reflection of the global LPG price movements and associated costs. Interestingly, the prices of domestic LPG have remained unchanged.
India's reliance on imported LPG is significant, with approximately 60% of its LPG requirement being sourced from abroad. Consequently, domestic LPG prices are closely tied to international prices, with Saudi CP serving as the primary international benchmark. The statement from the Oil Ministry highlights that while the average Saudi CP rose by a substantial 21% from USD 385 per tonne in July 2023 to USD 466 per tonne in November 2025, the price of domestic LPG was reduced by approximately 22% during the same period, from Rs 1,103 in August 2023 to Rs 853 in November 2025.
To protect domestic consumers, the effective price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder, which typically costs around Rs 950, is available at a subsidized rate of Rs 853 for non-PMUY domestic consumers in Delhi and an even lower Rs 553 for PMUY beneficiaries.
