Is Henry Pollock the next big thing for England's rugby team? Northampton Saints' boss, Phil Dowson, certainly thinks so, backing Pollock to step up and fill the shoes of the departing Tom Willis, who's heading to France. But here's where it gets interesting: England's head coach, Steve Borthwick, seems to be leaning towards using Ben Earl at No.8.
Pollock, however, has already shown he's capable, having played at the base of the scrum for the Saints and even starting in two games for the Lions this past summer. Dowson highlights Pollock's exceptional skills, stating, "He belies his stature in the way that he manages to make metres, and his carrying is so good. His ball playing is excellent, and he can do things that people can’t do. He sees space where others don’t." Dowson emphasizes his confidence in Pollock, saying he'd have no hesitation in playing him at No.8 for the Saints.
Summer signing Callum Chick has also been in the mix, starting five times in that position this season. But Dowson is ready to deploy Pollock when needed.
Dowson also revealed that Pollock, along with Fin Smith, returned from the Lions tour with a 'chip on their shoulder,' disappointed at not getting a test match appearance. This speaks volumes about their ambition and drive. Dowson believes this experience has fueled their desire to improve. "Those two lads came back with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, I think, and frustration that they wanted to be better."
Dowson is eager to see how Pollock and Smith will apply their experiences over the next six months. He noted that they're both hungry to achieve more.
A key point to consider: The competition for the No.8 position is fierce, and Borthwick's final decision will depend on his specific game plan. Could this be a point of contention among fans?
