A tragedy has struck Indore, with 13 lives lost due to water contamination, leaving over 1,100 residents affected. MP Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya is leading the charge in the aftermath, focusing on immediate relief and long-term solutions.
Minister Vijayvargiya has been overseeing the response in Bhagirathpura, ensuring free treatment for all affected individuals. Five ambulances have been deployed, and the situation seems to be stabilizing, with fewer new patients arriving. Medical facilities, including Arvind Hospital and MY Hospital, have made 100 beds available each, and some children are being treated at Chacha Nehru Hospital. The minister emphasized that no one will bear the financial burden of treatment, especially considering the affected area's economically weaker sections.
He stated, "We will stay here in Bhagirathpura until no more patients come in, and we will manage the entire situation." The source of the contaminated water has been identified and is undergoing repairs, with an expected return to normalcy within a day or two. Residents are advised to boil water before consumption. To aid the public, 50 water tankers are distributing Narmada water, and chlorine is being provided to every household.
But here's where it gets controversial... In a separate post on X, Minister Vijayvargiya expressed regret over his earlier comments, which were perceived as insensitive. He acknowledged his team's tireless efforts over the past two days and apologized for any offense caused, vowing to remain committed until the situation is fully resolved.
According to news agency PTI, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava confirmed seven fatalities initially, with over 1,100 people affected in Bhagirathpura, including 111 hospital admissions. Vijayvargiya has acknowledged official lapses and promised strict action, stating that those responsible will not be spared, regardless of their position.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav revealed that the contamination resulted from a leak in the main water supply pipeline, compounded by a toilet constructed above it. Following orders from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, a zonal officer and an assistant engineer have been suspended, and the services of an in-charge sub-engineer have been terminated. A three-member committee, led by an IAS officer, has been established to investigate the incident. The government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased.
Relief operations, including water distribution, chlorine supply, and medical care, continue under Vijayvargiya's supervision, while the pipeline repairs are underway.
