Exciting Developments for Johan Oviedo: Signs of a Strong Comeback!
Johan Oviedo is showing promising improvements in his fastball since returning from elbow surgery, according to Mike Petriello at MLB.com. While initial statistics may not paint the most favorable picture for Oviedo, the Boston Red Sox conducted a more thorough analysis and were encouraged by the progress of the right-handed pitcher’s fastball.
Before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024, Oviedo had a respectable season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, logging 177.2 innings in 2023. During that season, he notably ranked 11th in Major League Baseball with an impressive plus-11 Run Value on his slider, illustrating his capability with that pitch. However, his fastball performance told a different story, landing him at a disappointing minus-10, placing him 178th out of 179 qualified starting pitchers. Although his four-seam fastball boasted commendable velocity at 96 mph, it lacked effective vertical movement.
Fast forward to his return in 2025, and both his velocity and movement metrics have shown remarkable improvement. The fastball that previously allowed a .275 batting average and a .465 slugging percentage in 2023 has dramatically dropped to .149 and .383, respectively. Moreover, his strikeout rate, or Whiff rate, soared from 18.5 percent to an impressive 31.3 percent. The Stuff+ metric, which evaluates a pitcher's effectiveness, also saw a substantial rise from 82 in 2023 to 115 last year.
The Red Sox are optimistic that they are timely in acquiring Oviedo, yet it’s essential to consider the limited sample size he provided in 2025—only 40.1 innings pitched—and to acknowledge that his walk rate has worsened slightly, increasing from 4.2 walks per nine innings in 2023 to 5.1 in 2025.
