Living the Dream: A Retired Teacher's Life on a Cruise Ship (2025)

Imagine a life of perpetual adventure, where your home is a cruise ship, and the world is your playground. This is the reality for Sharon Lane, a retired language teacher who, at 64, decided to embark on a journey like no other.

After a lifetime in Los Angeles, Sharon sought a change, a left-turn at sea, if you will. And what a turn it was!

At 77, Sharon realized her dream of living aboard the Odyssey, a Villa Vie Residences cruise ship that offers a unique 'Endless Horizons' program. This program allows passengers to own, rent, or lease a cabin for life, providing a permanent residence at sea while exploring the globe.

The Odyssey's maiden voyage, which began last October from Belfast, is an epic three-and-a-half-year journey, visiting 425 ports in 147 countries. It's a voyage that Sharon describes as an 'investment in her life', a chance to explore the world without the hassles of airports and planes.

Sharon discovered Villa Vie's 'Golden Passport' scheme, which offers a one-time payment for a cabin based on age, with prices starting at $189,999 for those aged 75-79. She sees it as a way to buy the 'cheap seats' and live a life of adventure.

'A friend sent me an article about the ship. I read it and thought, this is for me!' Sharon exclaimed.

But here's where it gets controversial... While many aboard the Odyssey are eager to explore new ports, Sharon finds her bliss at sea. 'I've always been an ocean person,' she says. 'We like the environment, the motion of the ocean, the blue, and the smell of the salt.'

And this is the part most people miss... The Odyssey provides a unique community, with a team dedicated to ensuring a comfortable life at sea. From cooking meals to providing entertainment and medical care, the crew ensures a seamless experience.

'Even the smallest jobs, like checking all the TVs are working, are taken care of,' Sharon notes. 'In life on land, you'd have to wait for help. But here, they're proactive.'

Of course, there are trade-offs. Sharon misses her favorite restaurant and easy access to popcorn. But the positives outweigh the negatives. She's made full use of the ship's library, reading 18 books in just three months!

Since leaving Belfast, the Odyssey has visited Europe, the Caribbean, South and Central America, and the USA. Sharon's first real adventure was sailing across the Pacific to Japan. She's most excited to visit South Africa, where she lived for two years, and western Europe, to explore her ancestral roots.

Before each port, residents receive 'port talks' with essential information, but it's the close-knit community that really shines. 'People here have traveled their whole lives. They've filled up five passports, and some can't even count how many trips they've taken. It's a neighborhood of travelers, helping each other out.'

The world of residential cruising is a new concept, with Villa Vie aiming to build a 'true residential community at sea.' CEO Kathy Villalba explains, 'The Golden Passport program ensures this lifestyle is accessible at every stage of life, allowing residents to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime circumnavigation.'

For Sharon, it's about freedom and self-care. 'This is definitely something you do for yourself. It's about time some people did things for themselves. It is our turn.'

So, what do you think? Is this a unique and exciting way to retire, or does it raise concerns about the sustainability of such a lifestyle? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
