Kylian Mbappe Achieves Ronaldo-Level Glory as Real Madrid Triumphs Over Sevilla
It's not every day you witness history in the making, but that's precisely what unfolded when Kylian Mbappe mirrored Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable goal-scoring feat for Real Madrid! On Saturday, in a thrilling La Liga showdown, Mbappe equaled Ronaldo's club record of 59 goals in a single calendar year. This momentous occasion, coupled with Jude Bellingham's impressive performance, led Real Madrid to a decisive 2-0 victory against Sevilla.
Mbappe, the French football superstar, sealed his place in the record books by confidently converting a late penalty. This followed Bellingham's earlier header, setting the stage for a memorable match. This win was crucial, allowing 'Los Blancos' to narrow the gap with league leaders Barcelona to just one point before Barcelona's Sunday match against Villarreal.
"To do like Cristiano did, my idol, the best player in Real Madrid’s history and a world great, it’s an honour for me," Mbappe shared, celebrating his 27th birthday on the same day.
This victory marks Real Madrid's third consecutive win across all competitions, a welcome change after a string of just two wins in the previous eight games. This has slightly eased the pressure on coach Xabi Alonso, even though the team's overall performance was still somewhat underwhelming.
"We’ve got some time now to analyse and reflect where we are now," Alonso told reporters, looking ahead to the winter break. "We want to do better, we’re self-critical, we got the three points and now we’ll use this time and try to start the year better."
Sevilla, who had previously stunned champions Barcelona with a 4-1 victory in October, put up a strong fight, with veteran Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez playing a key role.
Early in the game, Odysseas Vlachodimos made a crucial save to deny Fran Garcia. As the match progressed, Real Madrid gradually gained control. Bellingham's header, courtesy of a well-placed free-kick by Rodrygo Goes, put the hosts in the lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Rodrygo, however, was later booked for diving, adding a touch of controversy to the first half. Sanchez's acrobatic attempt landed on the roof of the net, keeping Sevilla in the game. Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda was sent off at half-time due to dissent, but his team remained determined in their pursuit of an equalizer.
In the second half, Courtois was tested with saves against Isaac Romero, while Mbappe relentlessly pursued Ronaldo's record. Mbappe's header hit the crossbar, and his shot narrowly missed the target.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sevilla defender Marcao's foul on Bellingham led to his second yellow card and subsequent dismissal, significantly impacting his team's chances. Real Madrid came close to a second goal, with Mbappe setting up Rodrygo, whose shot was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Vlachodimos.
Eventually, Mbappe got the goal he craved, converting a penalty after Juanlu's foul on Rodrygo. Mbappe sent Vlachodimos the wrong way, scoring his 59th goal of the year and equalling Ronaldo's record. Mbappe celebrated with Ronaldo's signature move, acknowledging the Portuguese legend, Real Madrid's all-time top goalscorer.
"I wanted to give him a wink because he’s always been kind to me," Mbappe said. "He was my idol as a kid, I have a very good relationship with him, he’s a friend now."
And this is the part most people miss... Madrid was awarded another penalty after Bellingham went down, but it was overturned by VAR. The referee then awarded another penalty for a foul on Rodrygo, but it was outside the box, and the decision was reversed. Mbappe's free-kick narrowly missed the top corner as he aimed to surpass Ronaldo's record.
"Scoring 59 goals is not easy, he’s got quality and talent — it’s hard to stop him in training," said Courtois, emphasizing the need for the team to improve next year. "Hopefully 2026 comes with trophies, but for that we have to improve our level," he added.
In other matches, Celta Vigo moved up to seventh place despite a 0-0 draw with Real Oviedo, while Levante and Real Sociedad played to a 1-1 draw. Osasuna's 3-0 victory over Alaves propelled them to 12th place.
