State Champions and Awards: A Recap of the 52nd Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving Finals (2026)

Imagine a pool filled with the best young swimmers and divers in Indiana, all vying for the ultimate title. But here's where it gets emotional: among these talented athletes, one stands out not just for her speed in the water, but for her unwavering determination and character. Meet Catie Brenneman, the latest recipient of the Mental Attitude Award, whose story is as inspiring as it is impressive.

The Rising Star of Concord High

Catie Brenneman, a senior at Concord High School, was honored with the Mental Attitude Award by the IHSAA Executive Committee following the state meet in Indianapolis. This prestigious recognition isn’t just about athletic prowess—it celebrates a student-athlete’s mental fortitude, academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement. And Catie? She embodies all of these qualities and more.

Academically, Catie ranks fourth in her class and is a proud member of the National Honors Society. Her swimming achievements are equally remarkable. A USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American for three consecutive years, she’s also a four-year All-Conference selection in the Northern Lakes Conference. This season, she qualified for the 100 and 200 freestyle events and was a key member of Concord’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Remarkably, Catie qualified for the state meet all four years of high school, earning medals each time. As a freshman, she shattered Olympian Lindsay Benko’s sectional record in the 200 freestyle and now holds school records in the 200 free, 500 free, and 200 IM.

Beyond the Pool: A Leader in Every Sense

Catie’s impact extends far beyond the pool. This summer, she’ll celebrate her 10th year as a 4-H club member, where she’s a dedicated volunteer, mentoring younger members and contributing to the annual Elkhart County Fair. She also volunteers as a timer for the Concord Swim Club and Concord Junior High Swim Team. Her commitment to giving back is a testament to her character.

A Legacy in the Making

Catie, the daughter of Dan and Angie Brenneman of Elkhart, Indiana, is set to attend the University of Notre Dame, where she’ll major in marketing and swim for the Fighting Irish. Her achievement marks the second time a Concord girls swimmer has earned this award, following in the footsteps of her sister, Grace Brenneman, who received it in 2022. Talk about a family legacy!

And this is the part most people miss: The Mental Attitude Award isn’t just handed out—it’s earned through nominations from principals and coaches, with the IHSAA Executive Committee selecting the senior who best exemplifies the award’s criteria. As part of this honor, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s corporate partner, presented $1,000 to Concord High School’s general scholarship fund in Catie’s name.
