Taylor Swift's Sea Otter Shirt Raises $2 Million for Monterey Bay Aquarium
Taylor Swift's influence on local economies is undeniable, but her impact on sea otters is equally remarkable. When she wore a Sea Otter shirt in the film 'The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,' the Monterey Bay Aquarium took notice. They brought back the 90s-era design and announced that proceeds would go to their Sea Otter Program.
It all started when Taylor Swift appeared on her fiancé Travis Kelce's podcast 'New Heights' to announce her 12th studio album, 'The Life of a Showgirl.' During the episode, Travis shared his lifelong goal of rescuing and befriending a sea otter. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, impressed by Travis's passion, invited him to meet their sea otters.
Swifties, Taylor Swift's dedicated fans, took to social media to find the shirt, only to discover it was from 1993 and not available. They began requesting the shirt on the aquarium's social media and made $13 donations towards the Sea Otter Program, Swift's favorite number. Liberty Graphic Tees, the owner of the artwork, collaborated with the aquarium to bring back the design.
The Sea Otter shirt went live on October 16, 2025, as part of a limited-time campaign with 50,000 shirts available. It's a reward for those who donate at least $65.13 towards the Sea Otter Program and ocean conservation efforts. By 4:00 on Thursday afternoon, nearly 17,000 shirts had been purchased, raising more than $1.1 million towards their $1.3 million goal. One day after the shirts went live, $2.1 million had been raised for the Sea Otter Program.
Fans can still score a shirt by making a donation, but orders will be on back order due to high demand. The shirts will begin shipping in late October.
